Harris Goodwin has been involved in ballooning since 1976, when he first volunteered to be a scorer at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (AIBF). His work as an AIBF volunteer has been ongoing.  He has been a member of the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association (AAAA) and the Balloon Federation of America (BFA) since 1976.  Harris became a crewmember on several balloons and then a pilot and balloon owner.  He received his private LTA certificate on November 17, 1983, and earned his commercial LTA rating on January 21, 1984.  During 1999 and 2000 he flew Hydrogen balloons as a student and pilot on six occasions in the US and Germany.  Harris received his unrestricted Commercial LTA rating on June 26th 2000 and joined the Gas Division.  He has served on the America’s Challenge Committee since it was formed.

In December 2000 Harris ordered a Wörner AA5 Gas balloon that was delivered in Augsburg, Germany during May 2001.  Test and training flights were performed during June in Stuttgart, Germany.  The new gas balloon named D-Goodie was an entrant in the 6th America's Challenge With Team International – Goodwin / Fürstner in the 6th America’s Challenge.

In January 2002 the efforts of Mark Sullivan, Michael Wörner, Harris and many others resulted in the first net less Wörner AA5, 1000 Meter balloon (Delta Goodie) to receive a US airworthiness certificate and N number.
